Math Olympiads (grades 4-8)
Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Robert Styer, a CHEER co-op dad and mathematics professor at Villanova University, we are pleased to offer a Math Olympiads program to CHEER members, and the wider community, in grades 4-8.
What is Math Olympiads?
Math Olympiads is a problem solving contest for teams of students in grades 4 through 8.
How does the program work?
Students meet weekly to learn problem solving strategies for a variety of math problems. A series of five monthly contests, in the form of written tests, lets students compete, receive immediate feedback, and see how they, and students all over the world, are progressing.
What are the goals of MO?
Is travel involved for the competition? Where/When will you meet?
No. All contests are administered locally at the CHEER location in Upper Darby.
CHEER is offering the program on Friday mornings, before regular co-op programming begins. We will meet weekly from 7:45-8:40am at Crossroads Community Church 104 Heather Rd. Upper Darby, PA 19082.
The Math Olympiads season runs from the beginning of September 2018 to mid-March 2019. Our team will begin on October 5, 2018.
Does my child have to be “good” at math to join?
There’s something for everyone in the program. Students of all ability and experience levels can participate, have fun, and improve their mathematical thinking skills.
Will there be pressure on the kids as they compete?
No! We are running this program as a fun way for kids to flex their math muscles with a supportive mentor and a group of friends. Some participants enjoy the thrill of competition, while others just like solving problems and working toward a personal best.
Where can I find more information about Math Olympiads?
Their website has an overview of the program and sample problems: http://www.moems.org/program.htm
How can I register?
Use this link to register for the program.
What will the program cost?
The cost will be $20 for the year for the first student in the family, and $30 for two or more students in the same family. Payment can be made directly to Bob or Peggy Styer at the start of the program.
